Why is My Refrigerator Not Cooling?

When your refrigerator has lost its cold, it’s time to see what the issue might be. Often times it’s something as common as a routine coil cleaning. But, with these latest refrigerators, they are equipped with a variety of sensors as well.

Before we investigate further, we inspect the most typical and easy reasons for this issue. Here are a couple of things that we’ve determined can lead to a refrigerator that won’t cool:

Is it plugged in? This may seem like it is a odd question, but we’ve been called out to jobs that this was the problem. For some reason, the refrigerator was not plugged in. it’s possible a a pet unplugged it, or an electrician while doing a service visit. Whatever the cause may be, make sure it is plugged in.

Check the thermostat inside. This is a common issue for those with small children in their home. After all, kids like dials and buttons and so, without knowing they are doing something wrong, they mess with them. So, check that the thermostat temperature isn’t the cause of the warm refrigerator.

Refrigerator Parts to Inspect?

Check that the vents inside the freezer are not blocked with food or boxes. This is common because sometimes frozen veggies get stuck in the back of the freezer. There can be food in the way back of a freezer unit that has been forgotten about.

Check that the refrigerator’s condenser cooling fan is clear and clean of all debris. To check this, unplug the fridge and slide it away from the wall. The fan for most models is just at the bottom of the appliance or in the back part of the freezer section. Many times, customers do not think about cleaning this area of the refrigerator. But, it’s very important to keep it clean. And, it fills up with dust and fuzz quickly, especially in homes that have cats and dogs. So, grab a clean rag and clean the built-up dust out of the refrigerator coils and cooling fan.

This is not a suggestion for refrigerators that have the back coil system. Once everything is clean, plug it back into the wall and notice if the cooling fan spins.

The Freezer Unit is Cold but the Fridge Isn’t

There are a few more reasons for a refrigerator that won’t cool after these obvious ones to take a look at if the freezer is cold but your fridge is not. The evaporator coils are frosted over. This happens if there is a failure in the defrost heating system. Or the automatic defrost has an issue. The evaporator fan motor can be another cause.

Every fridge has a pair of evaporator coils. These coils are what gets cold and then the fan pushes the cold air around inside the appliance. The damper control assembly is not working the right way. The temperature control board provides the electricity to the compressor and fan, this probably isn’t the problem but it’s worth mentioning.

And, the thermistor might be malfunctioning, which is a small sensor in the unit that displays the temperature. Having one of our repairmen inspect it is the best option but these are some of the most typical problems.
